FFOA has just announce three scholarships were awarded for Continuing Education on a College Level.   Each will receive $2,000 to the university they will be attending this fall. All three recipients have been involved in the bleeding disorders community throughout their lives, and they choose to continue making a difference in the bleeding disorder community.

The judges had a very difficult job since all of the applicants were ambitious and accomplished young people – yet only three could be chosen.

The three Factor Foundation of America Scholarship recipients for 2011:
  1. Julia Jackson will attend Stockton College of New Jersey; she aspires to be a Physical Therapist specializing in the bleeding disorders community.
  2. Shane Lee, will attend Rochester Community & Technical College, he will study to be a Registered Nurse and share his knowledge to help improve patient’s quality of life.
  3. Elizabeth Goring an Artist will be attending Dallas Baptist University; She is a "carrier" and feels that her life with her brother who has hemophilia has been inspiring and brought a "legacy". She has researched her family tree and traced their line of hemophilia back seven generations.
The Factor Foundation’s grant-making goal is to support organizations providing comprehensive medical treatment, research, education, advocacy and socio-economic support to persons with bleeding disorders. Lucom and Lehman Saga Carries On
Just five years after his death, Wilson Charles Lucom, a multimillionaire expatriate born in Pennsylvania, still cannot rest in peace. Lucom’s last testament dictated that a variety of liquid and physical assets worth upwards of USD 50 million were to be sold, with the proceeds to be consigned to the Wilson C. Lucom Foundation, a trust established in order to provide needy children of the tiny Central American country with food and resources. However, Lucom’s third wife, Hilda Arias of Panama’s all-powerful Arias clan, has extensive connections with a number of political power hitters in the Panamanian establishment. Using her influence, her agents have claimed the entire estate for Hilda herself, creating a far different scenario than the U.S. millionaire ever envisioned.

Richard S. Lehman, a highly regarded Florida tax lawyer and long-time friend of the conservative philanthropist, was appointed by the Panama Probate Court as sole Executor of Lucom’s will. The instructions were explicit and the task was simple: the drawn up bequest, totaling millions of dollars, was to be donated to the foundation and distributed in the form of daily meals to thousands of deserving children. However, it has been just over five years since Lucom’s death, and Lehman continues to face a heartlessly corrupt legal establishment in a no-hold battle against the Arias family’s crusade to nullify the will, install Hilda as sole executor, and quickly siphon off Lucom’s assets.

Throughout his protracted legal battle, Lehman has faced countless instances of harassment. These have included a barrage of appeals, a murder charge, multiple bribery scandals, a criminal gang charge, two international imprisonments, and even an Interpol “dangerous criminal” alert — all of which were later thrown out or proven false. What they are basically doing is improving the volume in the middle one-third of the face. This has become an aesthetic standard in plastic surgery: When we show the effects of a cheek and neck lift, we gently sweep the facial fat and tissue vertically, filling the infraorbital hollows, improving the dimension and volume in the cheeks.

What patients have come to know is that the standard cheek/neck lift has dramatically improved their appearance, but it comes with the price of swelling between two to four weeks. The swelling is usually associated with fat transplantation into the upper face, which usually creates some exaggerated puffiness for up to one month.

What patients desire is a relatively low-cost, straightforward procedure that can be done without general anesthesia and, in fact, done without any anesthesia; just local in the office with relatively no downtime that can improve the contour of the cheek. The answer has now come with the use of the "Bafitis Natural Direction Youthful Direction cheek lift." With the use of Silhouette™ sutures that have absorbable cones that literally catch the fat in the cheek and jowl zones and lift it into more natural youthful direction, people could accomplish this in about an hour and one-half with no anesthesia, just plain local, or some mild oral sedation and local.

The Silhouette Lift™ has been proven with literally several thousand cases reported in Europe, specifically Spain, and is now FDA approved and available through Bafitis Plastic Surgery in this country. Dr. Bafitis is one of the clinical instructors teaching other surgeons how to use this technique and is proud to state that the technique has impressed him "more than he thought" in terms of natural results with essentially one to four days of swelling only postoperatively. Dr. Bafitis performs this technique alone or in conjunction with fractional CO2 lasering (Dot™ laser) of the entire face or specific zones. He also performs this with the concomitant use of Botox but prefers to hold off on the use of any fillers until about 10 days after this procedure. An interesting side note to the Silhouette Lift™ is that it has been reported that in the temporal incision placed in the hair, one can go back within one and one-half to two years and find the knot, pull it tighter, and achieve even further tightening.
